Using Statistical Software to Study Volcanoes

Hundreds of millions across our planet live with the risks posed by natural geohazards such as volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunamis, especially those living near Japan, which is a highly active region near a large population.

Over the last few decades, rapid increases in technology, instrumentation, remote sensing, and data storage have created huge opportunities in the field of data science in geoscience.

Determining how to prioritize and make sense of this data is a huge challenge.

Dr. Samuel J. Mitchell explains how data is collected around the world to measure the early indicators of volcanic activity. He shares his insights into the world of “big data” within geoscience, from the depths of the seafloor to incredible satellite image resolution. He challenges the JMP users to help determine the best way to make sense of all the data being collected, and explains why he is hoping for another eruption in the near future.
