The Toyota Production System Support Center (TSSC) has a team goal to distribute one meal every 15 seconds. That way, people waiting in line for the meals don’t have to wait as long. And the volunteers who take time off work to help each Thanksgiving use their time more efficiently.
With TSSC’s help, St. Vincent de Paul distributed 800 meals in four hours in 2010. That rose to 1,000 meals in about three hours last year, thanks to further improvements.
TSSC redesigned the process to make both sides of the meal assembly line equally efficient and reduce the heavy loads that volunteers have to lift.
