With a mission to make San Francisco residents the “healthiest place on earth”, the Department of Public Health developed a Strategic Deployment plan (Hoshin Kanri) in November 2021 with the assistance of their Kaizen Promotion Office (KPO).
The plan identified 4 key areas over the next 12-18 months:
- Achieve health equity through a community health model
- Improve health outcomes for people experiencing homelessness
- Hire and develop our diverse workforce
- Improve with data to enable and align
The San Francisco Health Network (SFHN) also conducted Strategic Deployment workshops in 2022 to identify key strategic 3-5 year goals, such as improving access and flow, decreasing overdose deaths and effectively managing revenue and expenditures.
They implemented Daily Management Systems, standard work, visual management and A3’s to improve their problem solving. They also adopted leadership practices of humble inquiry and leaders as coaches.
