Maternal Deaths Reduced by 64% in Nigeria Using Improvement Tools

Project Aisha addressed the critical maternal mortality crisis in Nigeria where approximately 1 in 5 global maternal deaths occur by targeting clinical complications like postpartum hemorrhage and systemic delays in care.

To tackle these bottlenecks, the initiative empowered healthcare workers with improvement science tools such as fishbone diagrams, process maps, and 5 Whys to identify root causes and develop a standardized change package of clinical work aids.

This data-driven approach achieved a remarkable 64% reduction in facility-based maternal deaths, far exceeding the original 20% goal, while also increasing the delivery of quality antenatal care by 85% and improving correct partograph use from 36% to 88%.
