Less than a month before my family wrapped up our time in Japan last June, Tim Wolput of Lean Japan Study Tours invited me to join him on a day-long gemba visit to two different lean thinking Japanese organizations in Tokyo – a local government ward office and dry cleaner.
I was particularly excited to go and see how kaizen principles were being applied in the government sector, as had visited many manufacturing organizations in Japan that Japan had adopted Toyota-inspired principles and management approaches, but hadn’t seen many examples in other industries.
