While it is well known that facilitating homogeneous teams is probably more straightforward and might provide solutions quicker, diverse teams are more likely the ones to propose breakthrough solutions.
Author Alessandro Lasi explains an example where adding a new HR Director to the team led to a proposal idea that greatly challenged the status quo, and actually allowed the team to cut lead times by an additional 15%.
He recommends using the 3.3.3 approach for picking diverse teams:
- 1/3 of your team from process Subject Matter Experts (SME)
- 1/3 from Decision Makers
- 1/3 from ‘fresh eyes’ (those not familiar with the process)
