Written by The City of San Diego committed to continuous learning of its employees, and launched a new workforce-training partnership with UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies and Rady School of Management in early 2024.
This collaboration between university and public sector government agencies also supports UC San Diego’s mission to help make learning accessible and quickly impactful to working professionals who are making an impact in San Diego.
One of the most popular areas of study for City employees has been the Lean Six Sigma Green Belt, which focuses on data-driven techniques for process improvement, waste reduction, and quality control. Most importantly, the partnership allowed departments to send full cohorts of managers through the program, instead of relying only on targeted projects.
Savanah Quon is a payroll management analyst with the City of San Diego Development Services Department. She took the Green Belt program and conducted a kaizen event to analyze the workflow for improvements.
This resulted in tracking templates and communication receipts to create more shared visibility in the payroll process. The result was fewer redundant steps, faster turnaround times, and stronger collaboration across departments without spending money.
