Chardon (Ohio) High School Provides Lean Certification for Students

A unique Lean Six Sigma (LSS) transformation program has been rolled out in secondary education at Chardon Local Schools, developed in partnership with RB Sigma. This initiative involves the training of administrators, teachers, and students. The program emphasizes practical application through working on key projects and participating in career fairs, beginning with a hands-on simulation involving a very realistic manufacturing setting to teach tools that can be directly applied to real-world problems.

The fundamental goal for Assistant Superintendent Dr. Ed Klein was to make the school district more efficient and effective in the use of resources, while simultaneously ensuring students gain industry-recognized credentials and develop a business mindset using real-world practices before graduating high school. To ensure the long-term viability of the program, it concludes with a “train the trainer” component designed to impart LSS wisdom to the district, so they can continue training future staff and students.

A key takeaway is the practical utility and industry validation of LSS principles in this educational setting. Students successfully applied Lean principles to tackle real operational challenges, such as addressing transportation problems at Park Elementary, collaborating with school board members and the principal.

From an administrative perspective, Principal Douglas Murray highlighted the transformative effect on school operations, noting that LSS principles helped create a more efficient master schedule and led to the implementation of a functional QR code hall pass system that allows the school to track student whereabouts at all times. Furthermore, industry partners like PCC Airfoils noted that while many technical professionals are highly skilled, they often lack a Six Sigma background necessary to “tie it together” and optimize everything in between the first stage of production and shipping. This training addresses that gap, providing high school graduates with sought-after skills (practical Lean training and experience, along with a Lean certification), which is evidenced by the fact that PCC Airfoils looks to groom these prepared and eager students directly into employees via co-op programs.

Chardon encourages other district leaders to inquire about LSS, stressing that these principles allow them to become a better school district and maximize their effectiveness despite limited resources.
