Babson College and Toyota collaborate with the Greater Boston Food Bank

Babson College wanted to give their business students a lesson in how manufacturing tools and techniques can be applied to the non-profit sector. To accomplish this, Babson College and Toyota joined together with the Greater Boston Food Bank. Their project goal was to improve the shopping experience and reduce what they throw away (“scrap rate”).

Along with Toyota advisers providing coaching, the students brainstormed how they could apply the Toyota Production Systems (TPS) techniques to their project.

Some of the ideas they implemented:

  • They created an efficient store pathway with colored tape
  • The pathways increased the capacity of the store by 15%
  • Signs were improved so that people thought about the safest way to lift and carry items
  • They repaired handles on equipment
